Swifts's first adventure in Botswana was at the invitation of a friend in 1990. He explored the area surrounding Orapa and travelled alone through the Magadigadi, camping in the back of a 4x4.

He paddled the Okavango Delta in a Makuru (traditional African Canoe), travelled through Moremi to Kanakanaka and Third Bridge, returning via the forest to Maun. He celebrated Nelson Mandela's release from prison along the banks of the Boteti river in the enjoyable company of locals, while experiencing many interesting encounters with wild animals and the February weather.

The first series expresses the joy at the freedom he felt amongst the people and the vastness of the land and skies. These works were exhibited later that year in Orapa.

Swifts's second sojourn in 1996 was camping with his family. This adventure allowed Swift to immerse himself in the incredible beauty of the Okavango Delta and the dynamic environment of the Chobe River. The resulting explosion of creativity and imagery was captured in the two series that followed in 1997.

Botswana 2: Chobe  circa 1997 (20 Works)
