About Tony Swift

Swift is totally dedicated to his art – he taught art for 32 years, 20 years as Principal of Carinus Art Centre Grahamstown South Africa – and retired early to work on his life's passion full-time.

Swift is renowned for his versatility and works in series, depending on what fascinates him at the time. He only works from his drawings and first hand encounters and never from photographs.

He has various styles in a variety of media: drawing, etching, lino cuts, watercolours, oil paintings, plywoodcut reliefs and sculptures in wood.

He intensely researches his subject matter: historically, geographically, socially, anecdotally and scientifically, resulting in works that range between super realism and total abstraction.

He has published 3 anthologies of poetry and 3 books: Rock Art Research, Greenboots and The Grand Piano.

Swift is presently completing The "Rites to Manhood" that has taken 28 years of research.

He has been commissioned as a conceptual designer of architectural projects and is a keen gardener.
